Netflix Acquires Warner Bros. for $82.7 Billion
In the biggest shakeup of the media and content landscape since the Disney acquisition of Fox, Netflix announced on December 5th that it will acquire
Warner Bros. Discovery's film studio and streaming assets for $82.7 billion in cash and stock.
This massive deal brings iconic franchises like Harry Potter, DC Comics, Game of Thrones, and HBO under Netflix's control.
What's included: Warner Bros. film and TV studios, HBO Max, and HBO.
What's not: Cable networks like CNN and TNT will be spun off separately.
The catch: The deal faces major regulatory hurdles. Combined, Netflix and HBO Max would control around 56% of global streaming users, raising antitrust concerns.
Theatre owners are also worried about Netflix's limited commitment to cinema releases. The deal needs 12-18 months for approvals.
Stranger Things Returns with Record Numbers
Stranger Things Season 5 premiered on November 26th and smashed Netflix records. The first four episodes earned 59.6 million views in just five days, making it the biggest English-language series debut ever on the platform.
The numbers: That's a 171% increase from Season 4's launch in 2022.
All four previous seasons hit Netflix's Top 10 simultaneously for the first time. Season 5 reached #1 in 90 out of 93 countries tracked.
