In VFX News, UK VFX house One of Us has announced the opening of a brand new studio in Bangalore. Haling the move as a major step forward in their evolution as a global company, the Bangalore Studio will be a fully integrated extension of their team, not just in name but in creative ethos and ambition. Check out the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/e2Chc2zP

Another studio taking the step into India is Barnstorm VFX with their new studio opening with local partners in Hyderabad. The Burbank based outfit has been expanding globally recently with opportunities opening up in London as well as North America. Here's the press release from vfxexpress : https://lnkd.in/g2tnTs6A

The end of July also saw the Phantom VFX acquisition of Milk and Lola Post. The latest in a number of partnerships between studios as we continue to see the VFX landscape shift in the post COVID and Strikes era. The emergence of studio groups with multi-disciplinary delivery punch seems to be becoming the new norm with the likes of The Cinesite Group, Dream Machine and PITCH BLACK delivering world class global projects.

Sadly we also saw a reduction in the Ingenuity / Ghost footprint in the UK, with teams being let go in early August. It's been difficult to verify the full extent of job losses or any studio closures with no official word from Streamland Media, but DAX is aware of at least 25 Artists being released at short notice.

Summer Superhero Box Office

No BIG surprises in the race for Summer Box Office dominance, with 2 big hitters going head to head.

  • Superman - Global Gross to Date tracking at $579million against a Production budget including marketing estimated to be between $325 million and $600 million.
  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Global Gross tracking at $435 million to date with a strong debut at $216 million but a steep second week drop off. With a Production budget north of $200 million before marketing, it will need to exceed $500 million to break even.
  • With $700 million seen as a benchmark for clear success in this genre, DC and Marvel will be hoping for a final push on these numbers before the summer's out.
