Do you see form and shape as the foundation of storytelling?
We’re looking for a Mid-to-Senior Modeller who can create characters, creatures, props, and environments with the precision and artistry needed to make them come alive on screen.
This role has a strong preference for candidates who can work on-site at our Tokyo studio. For the right candidate, relocation support may be available. You’ll collaborate with lookdev, rigging, layout, and other production teams to build clean, detailed models that are both technically sound and artistically inspiring.
You should be confident taking ownership of assigned assets, responding thoughtfully to creative and technical feedback, and helping maintain a high standard of modelling across the show.
Key Responsibilities
- Asset Modelling: Create high-quality models for characters, creatures, props, and environments that meet both artistic and technical requirements.
- Hard Surface & Organic Work: Build everything from intricate mechanical assemblies to anatomically detailed characters and creatures.
- Sculpting & Detailing: Use ZBrush and other tools to create nuanced organic detail, with clean topology and optimised mesh density for production needs.
- Procedural Modelling: Apply Houdini or other procedural workflows to support repetitive tasks, scalable modelling systems, or production efficiencies where appropriate.
- Production-Ready Assets: Deliver models with clean topology, well-organised UVs, and appropriate structure for shading, lighting, rigging, animation, and downstream departments.
- Creative & Technical Ownership: Take responsibility for assigned assets from brief through delivery, balancing artistic quality, production requirements, and schedule expectations.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with lookdev, rigging, layout, animation, and FX teams to ensure assets integrate smoothly across the pipeline.
- Feedback & Review: Present work in dailies, respond constructively to supervisor and director notes, and help identify practical solutions when feedback affects modelling, rigging, or lookdev requirements.
- Support for the Team: Provide guidance, feedback, or technical advice to junior modellers when needed, while helping maintain a positive and collaborative team environment.
- Problem Solving: Tackle complex design and production challenges, finding creative ways to deliver within technical and artistic constraints.
What You’ll Bring
- Experience: Approximately 5+ years of modelling experience in VFX or animation production, with strong mid-to-senior level production experience.
- Software Proficiency: Strong skills in Maya and ZBrush, with Houdini experience or interest in procedural workflows. Familiarity with Substance, Mari, or equivalent texturing/lookdev workflows is an advantage.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of topology, UV mapping, subdivision workflows, displacement, mesh optimisation, and asset preparation for downstream departments.
- Artistic Eye: Ability to sculpt and model both realistic and stylised assets with strong attention to anatomy, proportion, silhouette, form, and detail.
- Production Judgement: Confidence making sensible modelling decisions based on creative intent, rigging needs, lookdev requirements, and production schedules.
- Collaboration: Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to receive feedback professionally and contribute constructively in a production environment.
- Mentoring Mindset: Willingness to support less experienced artists through informal guidance, feedback, or practical problem-solving when appropriate.
- Location: Strong preference for candidates who can work on-site in Tokyo. Relocation support may be considered for the right candidate.
- Languages: Proficiency in English is required; Japanese is an advantage.
If you’re ready to create the forms that become the foundation of unforgettable visuals, we’d love to hear from you.
