Job Overview
As a CG Supervisor, you oversee the technical and artistic execution of all CG departments throughout production. Working closely with the President, Production, Supervisors, and the Art Directors, you ensure the successful delivery of projects by maintaining high creative standards, supporting cross-department collaboration, and driving efficient production workflows.
You provide leadership and technical direction across the CG pipeline, identifying production challenges, developing practical solutions, and helping teams deliver high-quality work within schedule and budget. As a department leader, you foster collaboration, mentor artists and supervisors, and contribute to the continuous improvement of studio processes and technology
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the artistic and technical execution of all CG departments, ensuring projects are delivered on schedule while maintaining the highest quality standards.
- Partner with the Head of Departments, Production, and Supervisors to establish production priorities and resolve technical or workflow challenges.
- Collaborate with the Art Director to translate the creative vision into practical, production-ready solutions.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to Supervisors, Leads, and artists across multiple productions.
- Identify production risks early and develop proactive solutions that balance creative goals with production timelines and budget constraints.
- Work closely with Modeling, Rigging, Animation, FX, Shot Finaling, Lighting, and Compositing teams to ensure seamless collaboration throughout production.
- Facilitate clear communication between Production and CG departments, ensuring priorities, updates, and challenges are effectively communicated.
- Evaluate department workflows and recommend improvements that increase efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
- Collaborate with Pipeline and Technical teams to develop and implement new tools, workflows, and production technologies.
- Participate in project planning, show bidding, and technical assessments for new productions.
- Assist with hiring initiatives, including candidate evaluations, interviews, onboarding, and performance reviews in partnership with Human Resources and department leadership.
- Monitor department performance and provide coaching, feedback, and professional development opportunities for team members.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and production techniques, identifying opportunities to improve studio capabilities.
Skills and Experience
- Extensive experience supervising CG production within the animation, visual effects, or gaming industry.
- Advanced knowledge of CG production pipelines and cross-department workflows.
- Strong understanding of modeling, rigging, animation, FX, lighting, compositing, and rendering processes.
- Advanced proficiency with industry-standard CG software, including Autodesk Maya and Foundry Nuke.
- Working knowledge of Python scripting and its application within production pipelines.
- Experience with dynamic simulation systems, including cloth, hair, and character effects workflows.
- Strong artistic eye with a solid understanding of composition, lighting, colour, and visual storytelling.
- Proven leadership experience managing teams, mentoring artists, and supporting department growth.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure while balancing multiple priorities and production deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical solutions that support both creative and production goals.
